Aim, Wire, And Timing

You should see what the light lands on, not the fixture.

Bad outdoor lighting has a look you can spot from the street. Bright dots your eye keeps going to, a deck rail lit up like a runway, and hard pools of glare with dark gaps in between. The fix is almost never more lumens. It is fixture choice, aim, and how many of them there are.

The other half of the job is wiring. Voltage drops over a long run, so the fixtures at the far end go dim and yellow while the first ones look fine. That gets solved with heavier wire and hub wiring instead of daisy-chaining everything down one line. Connections get made with waterproof direct-burial connectors, because wire nuts and electrical tape in a wet Tennessee flower bed are just a service call scheduled for next spring.

“Lighting systems fail at connections, not at bulbs.”

Then there is timing, which is the part that actually costs people money. A conduit sleeve under a patio or walkway is almost free while the base is still open, and it means a saw cut and a rebuilt section afterward. Same story on a deck, where wire runs through the framing before the boards go down. If you are building hardscape or a deck this year, make the lighting decision now even if you install the fixtures later.

What We Build

Lighting we design and install

Most systems mix all three of these. The first one is about safety, the other two are about how the place feels after dark.

Deck & Step Lighting

Deck & Step Lighting

Riser lights in the stairs, post cap lights, and strips tucked under the rail. This is the lighting that makes a deck usable at night rather than just visible, and it matters most on the long stair runs elevated decks need.

Path & Garden Lighting

Path & Garden Lighting

Path fixtures spaced so the light pools overlap instead of leaving dark patches, plus uplights that give tall trees some presence after sunset. Done well you notice the yard has depth, not that there are lights in it.

Patio & Feature Lighting

Patio & Feature Lighting

Wall washes along seat walls, downlights built into a pergola, bistro string lights over a dining area, and task lighting where somebody has to see what they are cooking. This is the layer that decides whether people stay out there.

Does landscape lighting need a permit or an electrician?

The low-voltage side, meaning everything downstream of the transformer, generally does not. The 120 volt outdoor receptacle or circuit feeding that transformer does, it has to be GFCI protected, and it belongs to a licensed trade. If your yard does not already have suitable power out there, we handle that part too.

Lighting doubles the hours you actually use the space.

An unlit patio is a daylight patio. That is a strange outcome after spending real money on hardscape, especially in summer when the good part of the evening starts around the time the light goes. Lighting is usually the cheapest line item in an outdoor project and the one that changes how often the space gets used.

We are a local crew that designs and installs deck and landscape lighting across Middle Tennessee, sleeved and wired during the build when we are already on site, with one point of contact from your first call through the final walkthrough. No subcontractor shuffle, no surprise line items.
