Why Height Changes Everything

A tall deck is not a short deck on longer posts.

Nashville does not hand out flat back yards. Lots roll off toward a creek, walkout basements sit half a story below the kitchen, and plenty of homes have a back door that opens to a six foot drop. So the deck goes up.

Every foot of height changes the math underneath. Footings carry more load. Tall posts want to sway and need bracing. Past 30 inches the code requires a guard, and that guard has to hold up to a 200 pound shove from any direction, which is more force than most people expect.

“The higher it goes, the less forgiving it gets.”

So we size the footings to the load each post actually carries, set them below frost depth, notch and bolt the beams instead of just resting them, brace the tall posts, and tie the whole frame back to the house with lateral hold-downs. Guards go up at 36 inches. Any stair run of four steps or more gets a graspable handrail.

What We Build

Elevated deck options we design and install

How we handle a drop depends on how far it falls and how you want to move through the space. Here is what that looks like on Nashville lots.

Elevated Decks

Elevated Decks

One level, up off the ground, reached from a main-floor or second-story door. The stair run down to the yard gets designed, not tacked on. The space underneath becomes storage, shade, or a dry patio later.

Multi-Level Decks

Multi-Level Decks

Two or three platforms that step down with the slope instead of fighting it. One tall drop becomes shorter, safer descents, and each level gives you a natural zone for the grill, the table, or the fire pit.

Stairs, Landings & Switchbacks

A long run of stairs does not have to feel like a ladder. Landings and a switchback turn a steep descent into something you can carry a tray of food down, with even rise and run the whole way.

How high can a deck actually go?

Higher than most people think, but the build changes as it climbs. Footings get bigger, posts get braced, and the stair layout starts driving the design. On the tallest projects we bring in a structural engineer, and we will tell you at the walkthrough if yours is one of them.

We build up when the yard will not cooperate.

A sloped lot is the most common reason a Nashville back yard sits unused. The grade is wrong for a patio, the door is too high for a step down, and the usable flat ground is somewhere near the back fence. A deck fixes that, but only if what holds it up was sized for the height.

We are a local crew that designs and builds elevated and multi-level decks matched to Middle Tennessee soil and slope, with one point of contact from your first call through the final inspection. No subcontractor shuffle, no surprise line items.
