Where Walkways Go Wrong

The step you trip on is the one that is a half inch off.

A patio is somewhere you sit. A walkway is something you move across, usually carrying something, often in the dark, sometimes in the rain. That changes what matters about it. Width, drainage, and above all whether every step feels the same underfoot.

Code caps exterior risers at 7 3/4 inches and sets treads at a minimum of 10 inches, and it allows no more than 3/8 inch of difference between the tallest and shortest riser in a flight. That last rule is the one crews break, and inspectors fail more stairs on it than on anything else. Your leg learns the height on the first step and expects it on every step after.

“Your foot memorizes the first riser. Every one after it had better match.”

The other place walkways fail is at the transitions, where the path meets a driveway, a porch slab, or a patio. Those edges butt up against something that is not going to move, so any settlement shows up as a lip you catch a shoe on. We compact the base right out to the edge, restrain it so nothing creeps, and slope the surface so water leaves rather than sitting in the joint and freezing there in January.

What We Build

Walkway and step work we take on

Most projects are one of these three, and plenty of them are all three at once when the front of a house gets reworked.

Front Entry Walkways

Front Entry Walkways

The route from the driveway or street to your door, built wide enough for two people to walk it side by side. This is the first thing every guest, delivery driver, and buyer uses, and it is usually the cheapest thing you can change out front.

Garden & Connector Paths

Garden & Connector Paths

Side yard routes, stone steppers through planting beds, and the shortcut everyone already walks that has worn down to bare dirt. Narrower, more informal, and often the fix for a drainage problem at the same time.

Steps & Landings

Steps & Landings

Paver step units or natural stone slab treads, set to an even rise the whole way up. On a long grade we work in a landing, which breaks the climb and gives you a place to stop with your hands full.

How wide should a walkway be?

Thirty-six inches works for one person. Forty-eight lets two people walk side by side, or one person carry a laundry basket without brushing the plants. For front entries we usually push toward the wider end, because a narrow main walk makes a house feel smaller than it is.

The walk to your door gets used more than anything else.

A back patio gets used on good evenings. The front walk gets used every day, by everyone, in every kind of weather. It is also the part of the property most likely to be original, cracked, and two inches out of level at the porch.

We are a local crew that builds walkways and steps to consistent dimensions and real drainage, matched to Middle Tennessee soil, with one point of contact from your first call through the final walkthrough. No subcontractor shuffle, no surprise line items.
